For all the lonely hearts out there, this Valentine’s Day is just another lazy Sunday. But for you, it’s the sexiest, most romantic and terrifying day of the year. Luckily, we’re here to help.
Planning a superb Valentine’s date can be daunting, whether it’s your first time taking a crack at being the most romantic guy on the planet or you have a collection of memories from various lovey-dovey February 14ths. So we’re going back to basics (if you see our XL clothing collection you’ll see why), with an essential step-by-step guide to tackle all your worries and give you some top tips, to ensure you avoid any romantic catastrophes.
DO I NEED TO GET A CARD, FLOWERS AND CHOCOLATES?
You hear Valentine’s Day you think cute Hallmark card, a bunch of long-stem red roses and a heart-shaped box of chocolate delights. So should you be ticking all three boxes? The key is in understanding the subject of your admiration and adapting your romantic strategy accordingly. As unromantic and as that sounds, what it means is that everything you do will be in line with her wants and desires. So, is she the kind of girl that wants Shakespearian love confessions, does she enjoy a beautiful bouquet (or own a vase?) and is she known to sneak in a midnight Mars bar? Chances are it’s a yes, yes and yes! Did I mention chocolates are an aphrodisiac? Get to the shops.
WHAT ABOUT A GIFT?
If you’ve been seeing each other for a short while, you’re probably safe with the classic combo above. But if you’ve surpassed the ‘I love you’ milestone and are getting serious, then you can expect her to be expecting a little something else. The most important thing is that it shows that you really care. If she’s been rambling on about some artist, get her gig tickets; if her dream is to surf on the shores of Morocco, surprise her with a trip; if there’s a far-too-fancy restaurant she ogles over, make a reservation. If it’s something you know she wants, you can’t go wrong. And if you’re hard up for cash, don’t worry - showering her with compliments will have the same effect. It doesn’t take splashing out in the jewellery shop to make a girl happy, she actually just wants you. Diamonds aren’t really a girl’s best friend - you are.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Tonight is all about wooing your lady, so wear something you know she’ll like. If that's a plain white T-shirt, then pair it with some nice jeans and shoes, or if she’s into a funky blazer and patterned shirt combo then wear that! Just make sure you’re comfortable with your style - confidence is sexy.
WHAT DO I DO FOR THE EVENING?
You’ve got two options here - going out for dinner or cooking for her at home. Whether you choose a swanky place in town or a homemade pizza night in, creating an atmosphere of romance is paramount. That means cosy lighting (hint: buy candles!), luscious red wine (also an aphrodisiac!) and delicious food - and don’t forget to have fun!
WHAT IF I DON’T MEET HER EXPECTATIONS?
What you need to remember is that her expectations won’t be measurable by any material or quantitative value - all she wants from tonight is to feel like you absolutely adore her. Do that, and you’ll have met every single expectation she had. So don’t worry about turning water into wine; you don’t need to perform a miracle to tell a girl you love her.
Feeling more prepared? Good. Now get planning!
