Because mainstream fashion is designed for a certain so-called 'ideal' body type, other shapes and sizes are marginalised and under catered for. Plus size women and larger men are often told to simply follow a few simple rules in order to make the clothes that do exist work. The most well-known one, which every one from the fashionista to the hand-me-down-lover has heard of, is that you should wear black.
In the case of fashion, rules are definitely made to be broken, and everyone should feel confident and free enough to wear exactly what makes them feel best (that's why we sell lots of colours and plenty of cuts), but why is it that bigger people supposedly look better in black? We investigated!
1. Hiding in the Shadows
Because black is such a dark colour, the human eye can barely perceive shadows on black material. This makes it look smooth and even when worn, hiding any unforgiving rolls, lumps and bumps that make people look larger.
2. Slimmer Silhouette
Wearing black means you will have a more defined silhouette, as the edge of your body will contrast more strongly against backgrounds. Paler shades other hand will be less distinct against backgrounds, blurring your silhouette slightly and making you look deceivingly wider than you are.
3. Anything Goes
Black is celebrated in the fashion world for being easily paired with other colours to create a complimentary outfit. Try wearing black with darker greens, any shade of red or even a multi-coloured item if you’re feeling adventurous!
4. Black Never Goes Out Of Style
We’re always hearing about something or other being ´the new black´, be it a leather jacket, a certain type of hat or a pair of suede gloves. But if keeping up with the latest trend is exhausting you, you’re safe stocking up on some black – it’s always stylish, always on-trend and always that bit more flattering than other colours.
5. Black Elegance
Not only is black the very essence of elegance embodied in a single colour, it also exudes sophistication, confidence and control. Black is great for serious situations, such as important work days (interviews, presentations, etc.) or a classy night on the town. So if in doubt, go back to black.
